Being aware is probably the first step in preventing transmission of herpes.  Knowing when you "feel pain" even before the rash or vesicles/ulcers appear (since you can pass the herpes virusat that time as well); using anti-virals under the guidance of your doctor;minimizing stress; using a condom - can all be incredibly helpful in minimizing exposure risks to your partner.  Understand that if you do get pregnant, the liklihood is that your doctor will perform a C-section and not support a vaginal delivery to make sure you don;t pass the herpes virus to your new baby.
