Q: If you take Valtrex a couple days ahead before sex, are you still able to transfer?

me and my boyfriend are spontaneous. i do not take Valtrex daily because we havent had sex yet, but i think we will soon, as in possibly a week. if i start taking Valtrex now, can i still transfer?

Hi Ryann,

 

Thank you for your question. Valtrex does not guarantee that you will not transmit the virus - Valtrex reduces the chance that you will transmit the virus to your partner when you're not experiencing signs and symptoms of an outbreak. Taking Valtrex will reduce your partner's chance of getting herpes, and using a condom will further reduce his chances. You can read more about Valtrex and how it works here.
