Q: Can herpes be tested for in the blood?

I was diagnosed with herpes about a year ago, thinking that I got it from my parter who I just started seeing. We have been togther since I had the first outbreak and I have only had two more outbreaks in the year and a bit. We are still together now and he recently had a blood test that showed he didnt have herpes. I want to know if herpes can be detected in the blood and also if the virus can lie dormant for so long, what causes the initial outbreak?

Igg and IgM blood tests can tell you if you had recent or any exposure to herpes.  Any exposure - even years ago - could have given you herpes -even if it shows up as active disease years later.
