Why havnt I contracted herpes

I am 52 years old.My girlfriend is 50.Ive been dating her for 10 months.She has had gential herpes for 7 years.She has 4-5 episodes per year.Weve had unprotected intercourse together about 50 times in the last 10 moths.I tested negative to herpes 2 this week.Why?.Are there different strains of herpes that are not as contagious?.We dont have sex during her episodes.Im going to start wearing a condom.How much will this reduce my getting infected?.Thank you so much for answering my questions.......

Short answer - You've been lucky.
Wear a condom and increase your chances of staying herpes free. Don't continue to test your luck as just like in Vegas the odds are increasingly against you.
