the past month however, I have continual burning itching in genital area with "almost" blisters that appear then disappear several times a day. I increased the dose to 400mg three times a day for the last 10 days, but it has'nt helped. Any advice?

I am having the exact same thing happen! My "good" results lasted 8 months (no outbreaks or prodone symptoms) after 14 years of monthly outbreaks I finally went on suppressive therapy a year ago. Had one OB in November 08, then NONE until August 1st. It has almost been 7 weeks now and I get a few bumps that usually go away within hours.... then maybe a day of nothing... then bumps again! I also have lower pack pain and general fatigue almost every other day. I ALSO incresed my dose as you describe.... for almost 2 weeks with no change. I even tried to do 200mg every 3-4 hours to see if I could kick it..... nada. This is the most frustrating thing!! I feel like I "woke" the virus up because I had several nights of limited sleep... and lots of sun right before it showed up again. I am considering trying valtrex or famvir, but my insurance only covers Acyclovir, so I am really hoping it will start working again. I am hoping you read this soon and can update me on how you are doing. Did your ongoing outbreak stop yet? If so, did you stay on Acyclovir.... and just give it time? or try something else? I am at the end of my rope!!!
UPDATE: Well... what do you know? My Dr. does not think I have herpes! After almost 15 years of believing this is what I had.... I am now in doubt (not fully convinced but hopeful)... worst fear would be passing this on to someone thinking I'm in the clear. HSV1 is the only thing that came up in blood tests. I knew that a year ago... but HSV1 CAN reoccur frequently on the genitals.... but only about 1% of the time from what I read.... figured I was terribly unlucky..... even when one swab came back negative, I figured it didnt happen to culture.... well, now that I have been having a constant "outbreak" for almost 3 months..... my Dr. was able to really get in and swab really well.... and STILL negative.....he told me that in his 27 years as a gyno... my "bumps" dont look anything like herpes (I have read that other docs say this though).... he gave me an anti-fungal cream and..... well..... NO OUTBREAK (or bumps/symptoms).... for 6 days now.... 6 days may not seem like a long time.... but considering I had 3 months with no relief... it is huge! I also stopped the acyclovir at the same time.... certainly wasnt helping.... and if it isnt herpes I guess thats why.... just confused as to why I had 8 months without symptoms for the first time in 15 years when I WAS on Acyclovir... that seemed to be the difference. However... I am now realizing that this was also the time period when I separated from my husb of 17 years. so no intercourse with him might have been a factor.... IF this isnt herpes... then I am wondering if I had a fungal (yeast) skin infection all this time.... one that came and went? Skin yeast infection is not the same as a vaginal yeast infection....I know what those symptoms are....... Anyway.... I really wanted to share this info with other people suffering alone... trying to figure out what is going on without the support of a Dr. I spent so many years thinking I had herpes..... and it has even been more stressful trying to figure this all out while getting back out in the dating world.... Please..... go to your dr, get the tests.... dont stop until you get all of the info. Be sure!!

my primary sent me infectious disease MD who said my condition was most likely some type of infection, either bacterial or fungal. When I tried the anti fungal medication this condition cleared up.
