Q: can herpes lay dormant in your system before an outbreak occurs

My duaghter has been diagnosed with herpes.  She just gave birth to a new baby only 4 weeks ago.  She has not had any sexual activity since the birth and has not had any before except with her husband.  The husband is awaiting his test which we are hoping is negative.  My daughter's ex-husband was a character with a checkered past.  I was wondering if she could have contracted herpes while she was with her ex.  This has been more than a year ago and I didn't know if it could lay dormant in her system and now that her resistance is low since the birth of the new baby, could this have caused her first outbreak.  I hope that you ill excuse my ignorance, I am just trying to find out as much info for her as I can.  Thanks for you help!
