Q: I think I have genital herpes. Do you think this is herpes I or II?

I think I have genital herpes. I have all the symptoms except none have ever been on mucous membranes or on the edges. They have always been on the mons pubis. Do you think this is herpes I or II? I was 35 y/o and 6 mo. pregnant the first time I had a sore. I am now 60 y/o and have sores only when I am under long term stress. I have not been sexually active in 10 years. Thanks. pkgmsm

The biggest difference between HSV1 and HSV2 is where they usually establish latency in the body. HSV1 usually establishes latency in the trigeminal ganglion, a collection of nerve cells near the ear. From there, it tends to recur on the lower lip or face. HSV2 usually sets up residence in the sacral ganglion at the base of the spine. From there, it recurs in the genital area. However, both types can reside in either or both parts of the body and infect oral and/or genital areas. For this reason, getting tested at a clinic would be the best option. Reply
