Q: ok how would a blood test for HSV-1 discern "oral" herpes or genital HSV-1 ?

I had an oral HSV-1 on my mouth and have had them ocassionally since childhood. That it was "just a 'cold sore',as usual" as an older adult, and now with multiple sex partners in common, I was told I better get tested for herpes STD.  Ok for one  I tested positive for both.  I have never had an outbreak of genital herpes  HSV-2, that I was always told was transmitted by sexual intercourse, not by giving one a "bj".  Now one of them I was with tested positive for HSV-2 but not HSV-1.  How is that possible? Another partner(in the 3-some) tested positive for both HSV-1 and HSV-2   Does this mean the one that is only HSV-2 positive, be the one  responsible for giving HSV-2  to the other 2 partners.  This is just so very confusing to say the least and all the finger pointing is becoming hurtful all the way around.

You can pass HSV1 and HSV2 through oral to genital contact and through genital to genital contact.  So a blow job can pass HSV1 from a mans' mouth to a female's vaginal area or vice versa.  Obviously the same holds true for HSV2.  that's why use of a condom and knowing your partners health status is so important.  That and realizing that someoen can also assume they are HSV2 negative (because of zero "signs") and yet they can have HSV2 and pass it along.

My husband has HSV-1 and I contracted HSV-2 due to oral sex. He has never had an out break.  So he has HSV-1 and I have HSV-2.
