Q: Recently diagnosed with type 1 herpes

I was just recently diagnosed with type 1 herpes. My husband and I are happily married for 12 years and we are both very faithful and have an amazing sex life. As per my gyno I contracted it through oral sex on my vaginal that was shedding from my husband at the time. Recently he has not been feeling well but has had no symptoms of the disease. Of course, my only thought is that he must of contracted it many years ago before me and now he's shedding. We do have a doctors appointment schedules for his blood work. If he comes out positive.....what will our sex life be now? Will we always have to use condoms? Or since he may be the carrier can we will go on as usual? But, will I always have outbreaks? I'm very confused. I'm on an antiviral medication and yesterday was my last dose and I've been reading a lot on trying to keep this in remission by taking vitamins and changing my diet that will build my immune system to keep it strong to avoid anymore outbreaks.

Well good news is....you're married. What does this matter? hsv is not a virus that will cause life-threatening problems. IT lays dormant in the spine and comes out when it wants to like at times when the immune system is down. I think you 2 should do what it takes to stay happy together as you have been for 12 years. Don't let this change anything, especially since the herpes doesn't seem to effect men as bad as it does women who are of childbearing age. Some people with herpes don't have outbreaks for 6 years at a time, some people never get an outbreak at all , some people get outbreaks every month, but with time these outbreaks become less severe unless ofcourse the immune system is compromised by another disease at some point later on in life.  I hope this helps and atleast it's not hsv2. It is said that hsv2 is 10 times worse than hsv1. Hsv1 is very common. Almost 90% of population has it by age 80.
