Q: Have i been put at risk?

Hi,

I have been seeing a guy for a little while now, we recently slept together and used protection.

The next day he called and told me he had Genital Herpes, so although we used a condom there was still contact before the use of protection. I'm still trying to get my head around all of this and just wondered if someone can explain to me if i have been put at risk, and what i should do now? I have no symptons, i have been told the outbreak will occur if i have within a week of first contact.... but i have read differently. I plan to get tested at my local clinic on Monday but i would like to know more about this first.

I have tried to talk to the guy i have been seeing, but he is not very easy to talk to at the minute and is not answering my calls.I feel like i have done something wrong.... I appreciate it must of been hard for him to tell me, but he should have told me first so at least i could understand what (if any) risk i was putting myself in.

Any advice will be appreciated

Thanks

If you had skin on skin contact before the condom was put on you may be at risk.  Heres what you need to do. You will need to go in for a blood test, however, don't go in right away.  Most likely if this is the first time you have come in contact with the virus the test will show up negative.  You should wait at least 3 months.  That will give you a more accurate reading.  Your body takes weeks to months to create enough antibodies in you blood to have a postive reading.  Also make sure you look into blood test options before getting it done.  Some are type specific and more accurate then others.  You may not get sores for a while.  I was recently diagnosed and I may have contracted this years ago.  My viral culture came back negative however blood test came out postive.  My BF whom I had unprotected sex with came back negative and we were dating for about 5 months.  Hope this helps and I am praying for good news for you.

Well, the good thing is that you used protection. The bad news is that if he had any open sores or blisters that was not covered by the condom than you may want to get tested. I would strongly recommend you to still get tested because herpes can still pass on without any sore or blister that is noticeable. You are right that he should have told you about him having herpes. I ve been reading a lot about herpes since i am still wondering about my situation. If you notice a blister or sore on you vagina, go to the doctor and have he/she swab it. That what I did, my result came back negative, but I am going to get a blood test to be sure which I was surpised when i went get my results that the doctor told me they didn't do a blood test for herpes. The viral culture is said to be the most accurate test to know if you have herpes. This is when you have a blister or sore present at the time. The doctor will swab it and send it the lab to try and grow the herpes. This is not always accurate from my understand because there could be problems with handling the product and taking to long to process the senmen. The blood test is not always accurate either because you may not have any antibodies in your system yet. Get test as soon as you c a sore. and get a blood test just to be on the safe side.
