Most people two day to two weeks. Some people with asymptomatic herpes are unaware they have been infected. While this article is old on aymptomatic herpes, check it out: http://www.nytimes.com/2001/05/08/science/experts-voice-new-alarm-on-herpes.html.

I got my first outbreak within days of contact. But, some people never have an outbreak, or have such a small one they never even notice. You are lucky in the sense you haven't experienced an outbreak.
