Q: My OBGYN says I'm positive, the STD specialist says it's a false positive... Who do I believe?

I was told by my OBGYN that I was positive for Herpes Type 2. She prescribed Valtrex. I started taking it because I thought I was having my first outbreak. Nothing happened. The original ulcer healed, and I got another blister-type lesion. My OBGYN refered me to an STD specialist within her practice, and he immediately said I had a false positive. He wasn't sure what the lesion I had was, but he said it could be an infected hair follicle, from shaving or waxing, or any number of things. He said I don't have herpes and to stop taking the medication. I feel so happy to think I may not have herpes. At the same time, how do I know why I tested positive? Will I have a first outbreak at a later time? The key factor to me is that I don't think my ulcers were extremely painful. The specialist said herpes is very painful. What should I do? I also had ulcers in my mouth, so that was why I really thought I had it.

Tough situation. I would check your blood tests. IF you feel you should retest to make sure i would go for it. Some herpes outbreaks hurt some dont.
