Q: Is it true that if you have oral herpes that you can't get genital herpes?

Hello Everyone!

My son is 18 years old and has oral herpes.  He's had it since he was a baby and got it from his grandmother who kissed him on the mouth while she had cold sores.  Recently, he found out that he gave his girlfriend genital herpes via oral sex while he had an active cold sore on the outside of his lip.  His girlfriend knew he had one but continued to kiss him anyway despite his concern and talk about her getting them too.  After oral sex they had intercourse which led him to believe that he may have somehow given himself genital herpes too.  So I took him to the doctor yesterday and this guy checked him out because he did have a couple of tiny sores on his penis.  The doctor told my son that he could not get genital herpes because he already has oral herpes and that he certainly can't re-infect himself in another part of his body.  He told my son that the sores could be anything and even caused from using his penis a lot, and he said the sores were too small to do any tests on.  I've been reading a lot about herpes online and everything I've come across tells me that herpes can be spread to other parts of the body by touching the sores.  I've also read that if one has oral herpes it provides some protection from getting genital herpes, but no where does it say that one can't for sure get genital herpes if they already have oral herpes.  So who am I to believe?  The Urgent Care Doctor?  Or the Online Experts? I feel so uneducated!! Any knowledge and advice would be greatly appreciated.

you can have both type 1 & 2. I have both type 1 & 2. Its possible he infected himself but he would type 1 on his genitals not type 2. If he has type 2 herpes on his penis that means he had sex with someone that has type 2 on there genitals.
