Does your partner have symptoms? It usually takes a few days to a few weeks before symptoms appear. Even without symptoms, it is imoprtant that you understand 70% of all persons are infected by a partner without any symtoms. A condom alone is 30% effective. Antiviral drugs taken alone is 49% effective. Many people believe they can't infect their partner while taking antiviral drugs such as, Valtrex or Acyclovir. On my drug summary sheet for Acyclovir, it states: "This medicine is an antiviral. It works by stopping viral replication. However, this medicine does not eliminate the virus, is not a cure, and does not prevent transmission to others."
It's very important that you disclose herpes prior to having a sexual relationship with an unifected partner. Your partner should be also be tested. Persons with weakened immune systems such as Lupus or HIV, can become very ill if infected with the herpes virus. If you don't disclose it, civil courts are ruling in favor of the injured party. Herpes can be very expensive to treat.
