If I've had shingles, will a blood test for HSV 2 come back positive?

concerned
08/29/08

I've had pimples on my buttocks (only) off and on but most of my adult life.  They do not cause any discomfort, just embarrassment.  My boyfriend and I have been together sexually for 8 years, and he has -0- symptoms of herpes.  When I saw my Gyno today for my annual, I casually asked her if there was something I could do to clear it up, as I am beginning to date again.  She gave no thought and asked no questions and said it was probably genital herpes.  They drew blood for a HSV2 test, but took no swabs for cultures.  I feel in my heart, that this is wrong.  I've never felt sick or had breakouts, other than the constant pimples on the butt. I've got 5 days to wait, and this has thrown me BIG time!

Now here's my concern for a false positive.  About 6 years ago, when I took my daughter to the dermatologist, I had a small lesion above my eyebrow.  I asked the dr., he was quick to diagnose it as Shingles.  I felt this was wrong too, as there was no pain assosiated like I've heard about.  Yes, I've got stress in my life.  I'm a single mom.  Enough said.  He perscribed Valtrex and it went away.

Will that virus show a positive for genital herpes in this blood test?

I'm assuming when you were treated for the "shingles" that your doctor asked if you had chicken pox in the past and you said "yes" and I'm also assuming that when he examined you you had symptoms that would clarify that diagnosis of shingles - painful lesions that run along nerve pathways.

That being said - i don't know at what age the rash on your buttock showed up - was it after sexual experiences had happened in your life - opening the door to a possible exposure to HSV1 and 2?? Do they typically show up in stressful times?? Is the test being run for the herpes IgG or IgM??

I hope thes equestions offer some clarificatin or encourage you to talk to your doctor and get more information.
