I was infected with HSV-2 over five years ago. It caused an autoimmune disease. I have outbreaks every month that last for 10 days even though I take acyclovir. My girlfriend infected with HSV-2 recently started having outbreaks every three weeks after seven years of one or two outbreaks a year. Unfortunately, people with weakened immune systems have more outbreaks. With me, I eat organic take vitamins including zinc and L-Lysine avoiding foods with arginine. I meditate and do reiki. It's makes no difference. I am not able to have a sexual relationship (infected or not) with this kind of track record. That's why people with herpes have a moral obligation to disclose it and have their partner seek medical advise prior to starting a sexual relationship.
I was on Valtrex-- too expensive. I went on acyclovir (generic for Valtrex) twice a day and it's cheaper. Also, contact the drug company-- they may give it to you for cheaper. Good luck to you. At least with me, I was infected in my mid-50's so it hasn't ruined my entire life. I am at the age where I can live alone and be okay with it. I know how you feel. If it got any worse for me, I would take a knife and slit my throat.
Outbreaks happen typically during times of stress (emotional, physical, diet, illness, etc..) Relax.. although a cold sore is rather unsightly, and may be a bit painful as well, about 60% of people (ages 14-49) have the virus (HSV-1), so at least you don't have to worry too much about finding another person with the virus...
Acyclovir works well for outbreaks, but you do have to take it more frequently than the Valtrex...
Also: good news! Valtrex [valacyclovir] is now generic!!
