There are a number of strategies you can use to reduce the transmission of herpes, namely:
1. Avoiding sexual contact during active outbreaks and prodrome stages.
2. Using barrier methods during sexual contact - including condoms and/or dental dams for oral sex as it can be passed on genital/oral and vice versa.
3. The person with herpes can take antiviral medication on a daily basis to reduce the incidence and severity of outbreaks, and asymptomatic shedding (shedding of the virus when no symptoms are present).
