Hi , I was just diagnosed with herpes 3 days ago . I have been in bed for 8 days thinking that I had a serious UTI until my MD contacted me with the test results. I am experiencing severe lower back, leg and and foot aches right down to my toes . Is this normal? Will it go away ? what do I do?

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for posting your question.  I'm not a doctor, but I do have herpes and think I can answer you.

Yes, I believe that the pain you're describing is caused by the herpes outbreak and will go away with anti-viral medication.  The herpes virus lives in the nervous system, so some people experience pain in their body because the nerves are infected/irritated by the new virus that is in its system.  It is not really common, but it is "normal" and nothing to worry about.  There is not much you can do but take medication that your doctor prescribes, like Acyclovir or Valtrex, and get lots of rest until the symptoms subside.  If the pain doesn't go away after the outbreak is gone you should see your doctor.

From what I've heard and experienced, people who have really bad first outbreaks (like you) often don't get many outbreaks after that.  And if they do, they are much less severe.  So just know that this is the worst it will probably get, and it will only get easier and less painful going forward.

If you want more information about herpes, I recommend you visit the Genital Herpes Symptoms, Basics, and Coping with Genital Herpes sites.

I think you'll be feeling better soon.  Just hang in there!

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
