Im confused...

Topics:herpesGenital Herpes

Okay, I'll try to include everything.  Every since I was 9 years old I've gotten cold sores.  However I've never had constant outbreaks they've always been spread out in years.  My first one was in the fourth grade it occured under my lip, my second one was when I was probably about 16 it occured on my lip.  My third one was probably 18 or 17 and it occured on the corner of my mouth right next to my lip.

Recently I had another occurance at the age of 23 on the corner of my mouth next to my lip again the same spot as when I was a teenager.  I thought nothing of it because i've had them in the past and after talking to my mother recently she said she got them too around my age but stopped at the age of 30.

I told my girlfriend in passing that I didn't want to go outside because I got a cold sore (I figured it was normal..)  And she freaked out...

We've both been tested and have only had ORAL (no other type) sex twice and have been practicing abstinance for a year now.  My doctor tested for herpes (among other major stds and a cbc)back in november and he said everything was normal.  I dont know which type tested for though.  She got got tested in feb, her results were normal but she didnt test for herpes or a cbc...just your typical stds and hiv.

After my outbreak on my lip recently she decided to go back and get tested for herpes both types.  And she informed me today that she has type 2.  She is distraught and she explaned to me she has never had any outbreaks anywhere.  She has had partners before me, and she is my first and only person. (we've only had oral)

I'm really concerned now..we haven't been sexually active since my tests...except for kissing..for arguments sake lets say she has been faithful...is there a chance I contracted hsv 2 from her?  I'm very confused because cold sores are common to me because I've had them...and the whole hsv 1 and hsv 2 thing is very rband new to me...I can assume that I have hsv1 from long ago as a kid...but what about hsv2? I need some information until my appointment.  I'm losing my mind..I am a huge hypochondriac and this is the whole reason I haven't given myself fully to anyone yet.

Hi,

It sounds like you are beating yourself up over this situation and it's unlikely to help. You aren't supposed to have an innate knowledge or understanding of herpes and most people don't really understand the differences between HSV1/2 - not that these are markedly different.

Your question has some similarities to another I've recently answered. I suggest you take a look at Dr. Charlotte Grayson's sharepost about HSV1, HSV2 and Oral Sex. I think it might help to clear up some confusion about the differences and the nature of how the virus is transmittted.

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
