my sister has been married 8 years, she just found out she has herpes
Can this really lay dormat for years and you not know? Is there anyway to find out how long you have had herpes?

Yes, it is possible for herpes to "lay dormant" for years. It is also possible that previous symptoms were not recognised or associated with herpes.
There is no way to tell exactly how long a person has had the virus. A blood test which does not show antibodies could indicate that it is a relatively new infection, whilst the presence of antibodies could indicate that the person had had herpes for weeks, months or years.
