I have an extreme case of herpes. In part, it is due to a weakened immune system. I am currently taking acyclovir and before that, I took valtrex from day one. I have medical insurance but acyclovir is less expensive than vatrex. In the first year, I had about five or six outbreaks however they were very mild. Three years after I became infected I developed an autoimmune disease possibly triggered by the herpes resulting in monthly outbreaks. I still have them two years later. However, they are getting milder as I take better care of myself. I eat healthy and take many vitamins. Prescription medication may help you.
What I keep reading, they are suppose to dissipate over time. However, I believe certain individuals lack the immune system to suppress the frequent shedding required to stop the outbreaks. This website has a section that talks about prescription medication for reducing the frequency of outbreaks you may wish to explore.
It disturbs me greatly when infected partners minimize the impact of having herpes; believe they can't infect partners when they are not having outbreaks; taking antiviral drugs and/or using a condom provides 100% protection. Symptomatic herpes is expensive to treat. The person who infected me denied having any STDs (he was a medical doctor) either out shame or he didn't care. He tried to convince me that he was asymptomatic and could not infect me. When I was infected, I didn't recognize the impact and expense herpes would have on my life; I regret not taking civil action to cover my treatment costs.
