Q: Does no sores early on, mean no sores later on?

Right now I'm right at the beginning of facing this disease.  So far, I think I've had it for about 10 weeks.  No sores yet, only strange symptoms of urinary pressure and discharge. I look for sores daily, if not hourly.  Can someone tell me, if I haven't had them yet, am I still bound to get them?  If you don't have lesions or sores of any kind in the beginning, will you still get them at later recurrances?  I can't really even tell when I'm having an outbreak because my symptoms don't seem to subside. Thank you so much for your help - I don't know what I'd be doing if I didn't have this community.

Hi mercury,

Thanks for posting your question.  Though I'm not a doctor, I do have genital herpes and think I can answer you.

Unfortunately, the herpes virus is very different from person to person.  Therefore, there is no way anyone can know how he/she will be affected by herpes over his/her lifetime.  From what I've seen, people who tend to have really intense first outbreaks seem to have fewer outbreaks later.  I, for example, had very mild outbreaks at first, just tiny rashes, and six years later still struggle with recurring outbreaks.

But maybe the first outbreak isn't an indication, and it really depends on one's immune system, habits, and lifestyle.  If you aren't having outbreaks now, then just be happy about it, and don't worry about getting more until the time actually comes.  (ie DON'T check for sores all the time.)

It sounds like you're having constant symptoms, though.  Have you been to a doctor about that?  Are you taking medication?  It's possible those symptoms aren't even related to herpes, or are psychological.  I recommend you read the Herpes Symptoms, Treatment, and Coping with Genital Herpes pages for more information.

I'm glad you find comfort in this community.  Please keep participating with questions and SharePosts.  I'm sure there are others with the same thoughts/questions/concerns as you, and we'd like to hear your updates.
