Q: I just contracted herpes from my husband that had had herpes for 25 yrs. How can this be possible?

My husband finally found out what all the spots that he had for 25 years was herpes type 2.  My gyn and our specialist state, I just was exposed within the last 7 months.  How often does this happen and should we use condoms.  I have read that antibodies can kill the virus in some people, and now fear has set in and now I worry about even warts. I am postmenopause and have had different meds for pain and discharge since July.  If we try to have sex there is alway irritation and my vagina gets red and sore.  Maybe with all the nerve racking heartaching that I've gone through since the diagnoses has caused an off balance of harmones.  I was placed on Valtrex with no breakouts so far. I just keep thinking why is this happening to me in the prime of my life and why didn't I contract herpes before now.  I know I have several questions here, my life is in a spiral and sometimes think on other ways I could have gotten this disease from him. What is the probable after 25 yrs? Help? Thanks in advance.

Very possible that the virus was not active on his skin surface when you all had sex. I had burning and a foul smelling discharge. Thats what triggered me to get tested . I had been with my childs father for two years before getting the virus. I mean you can read lots of thing and they all say something different. If your husband wasnt taking medication for the disease I dont see how youdidnt get it befor 25 years. Herpes is a mystery. Naybe you are worrying about it to much. But dont Its not the end of the world and im sure if youve been together this long you can get through this together. Did you test positive for HSV??? I have been diagnosed since june and I havent had one outbreak with valtrex. I think the same as you im 26 and I wonder every day why did this happen to me at the start of my life. everyman I tell about my condition has turned away. probably will for the rest of my life. hope this helped. if you havent visited valtrex.com or herpeshelp.com you should it may answer your questions.

herpes can lay dormant for many years  before breaking out; many folk don't know who, how or why they got it, but they just do!  Use condoms with lots of lube.  Take lysine daily.  Stay away from beer, chocolate and nuts.  Try Premarin cream (vaginal) for the sore/dry thing.  Take medication if broke out.  Avoid hot tubs and sweaty friction that sometimes sets off an outbreak.
