Q: Can you give herpes to your partner when performing oral sex?

Partner N has herpes and is a female, Partner L does not and is a male. Can Partner L perform oral sex on Partner N without catching herpes? What happens if Partner N takes Valtrex 2 days before she wants to have unprotected oral sex can Partner L still recieve herpes if unprotected?

There is a very good article on this topic by Charlotte Grayson MD called The Truth About HSV1, HSV2 and Oral Sex. There are no preventative medications you can take in advance of sexual activities that will block the transmission of the virus.
