Can I test negative for the Herpes 2 test and still have the virus lying dormant in me?

I have been tested every 6 months for the past 8 years for Herpes 2 (by blood test) and have come back negative every time. I just went in for my recent exam and testing and now came back positive for Herpes 2 (I didn't have any symptoms).  Could I have been infected by someone I slept with years ago yet still have negative results all these years only for the virus to come out now or would my history of test taking indicate that I was exposed and contracted Herpes after my last blood test 6 months ago?

I guess the question that springs to my mind is why you are being tested so regularly? However with such regular testing, and I assume no changes in your pattern of sexual behavior during this time, my money would be on this last test showing a false-positive result. Worth a re-test perhaps?

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
