Q: "Asymptomatic shedding?" How worried do I need to be?

Being diagnosed with HSV 2 was quite a surprise, since I'd NEVER had an outbreak (at least one that I'm aware of... and I'm pretty perceptive and have a healthy level of paranoia) or had any other type of warning sign, along with being careful with sexual partners.

Anyway, without diving into all that, once diagnosed (and finally believing it), I began reading up on my newly acquired "condition," and learned about "asymptomatic shedding."  I'd always heard that if you have herpes, you can't spread it unless there's an outbreak.  Then I read about AS which says that I could still unwittingly spread the disease, regardless of symptoms.

I tried to get some info from a counselor, but since everything regarding this disease is as unique as its carrier, it wasn't any help.  How paranoid do I need to be about spreading HSV 2 via asymptomatic shedding?  As annoying and mood-killing as it might be, I can handle cautiously checking my junk beforehand whenever I'm going to be sexually active.  But according to what I've read regarding AS, that isn't good enough.

I don't want to spread this to anyone else... but I still want to be able to be physically intimate with my girlfriend.  Is there any way to be sure that I'm not spreading HSV 2 besides completely abstaining?

Valtrex or equivalent will reduce transmission to 1%.  With the use of condoms, this is the safest method to prevent transmitting it to your partner.  Unless you are spineless and do not disclose your status, I would suggest taking these precautionary steps.  In addition, if your partner does not have HSV1 or HSV2 and is healthy, Herpevac vaccine should be coming out on the market soon.  In addition, there is cutting edge technology being used in HSV research that needs public support.  I would focus on being safe, encouraging my partner to get vaccinated, and contributing to HSV research.  There's also a good site to get information from, www dot herpesisnormal dot com.
