Q: My husband has just given positive on HSV-2 (negative IgM).

Dear Sirs,

Seven years ago, and after unprotected oral sex, my husband was diagnosed with non-specific urinary tract infection. He was told that the bacteries had caused a prostatitis and that from time to time he may suffer of recurrent painful and frequent urinating.  It was like that during the last seven years. In December 2009 and after a few days of discomfort when urinating, he insisted on checking with the doctor for any type of infection. I told him he was completely obsessed about it! The doctor could not find anything at all, but after my husband's insistence, he decided to asked for further tests (blood and semen) and we just have got the results. He has an HSV-2.

My husband has never got any other symptoms, no sores or ulcers. He only had unprotected sex with two women, her previous girlfriend of three years, and myself, and only after months of being in the relationship and after being  tested on AIDS and other sexual transmission diseases. As far as we are aware, neither the ex-girlfriend or myself have any herpes symptoms but obviously, I will be checked as soon as possible.

We have been together for three years and married for a few months. Since our wedding we have unprotected sexual relationships and we are planning on having children. How can my husband's herpes affect our wishes of building up a family?

Thanks for your advice,

GS
