HSV-2 (genital) lives in the lower spine and doesn't settle in the upper spine causing oral herpes. However HSV-1 (oral ) can live in either the upper or lower spine. You can't re-infect yourself twice. You can infect your partner if he is unifected with or without any visible outbreaks.
