Q: If neither partner has genital HSV-2, and one partner perfoms oral sex with a cold sore

In a long-term relationship, neither partner had HSV-2.  The female contracted genital herpes and stated that she must have gotten it from the husband when he had a cold sore (HSV-1) on his mouth and performed oral sex.  Is it possible to get genital herpes in this way?

Thanks for your response!

Hi Marie.

As a matter of fact, I believe this is how I contracted genital herpes.  My outbreaks are down there, but it is HSV -1.  Not 2.  My boyfriend of 5 years has outbreaks on his mouth.  So, I do believe you very well could have gotten it from a cold sore on your husbands  mouth.  But, if tests show HSV-2 it is more likely contracted genital to genital.

good luck
