I recently had a first outbreak does that mean i have recently caught the virus from my partner

i met my partner 5 months ago we have been sexually active for 4 and a half months.Her last trip down to see me was for 7 days,we where very sexually active i have been with my last partner for 5 years and never once have i ever thought i had HSV-2 before and the last day she was down i noticed a small rash at the base of my penise & 7 days later i went to a doctor and he told me it appeared to be HSV-2i also had open soar on my upper right leg and a painful sore mucle in my upper left leg the docter put me on cycliclover and it has cleared up.Do you think i caught it from my recent partner or could i have already had it and my recent partner may not have it i hav'nt told her yet and i want to know how to approach her with it as to the fact of who's got it and who had it first and what we shold do about it thank you                 concerned HSV-2 patient

The herpes virus can lay in a sleeping mode for months to years before ever getting a break out.  It then can come out when you are run down and or stressed.  Remember you can become infected even if your partner does not have a break out.

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
