Q: if i have sex with someone with herpes but doesn't have an outbreak, can i still contract the virus?

I've been with the same girl for over 5 yrs. and he has herpes 2.  we recently broke up.  She had two outbreaks during that time we didn't have sex at all while she was having an outbreak.  I've never had an outbreak.  So I was wondering if I could still be a carrier?  Should I tell my next partner that my ex has the virus and if so how is a good way of going about that?
