Q: If I was tested positive for genital herpes does that mean my partner will too?

My partner and I have been having unprotected sex on and off for the last 7 months. I have not been with anyone else and I believe he has not either. Just reciently I developed a rash so to protect myself I went into the doctor to have it checked. I am being treated for genital herpes. I told my partner and he said he has had no symptoms at all. Does that mean only I have it? He has had cold sores before and I have not.
