Can someone have herpes 1 only and their partner herpes 2 only?
My Boyfriend got tested for STD's and all clear except herpes1 which we both knew he had. I was also tested and came back with a positive for antibodies for herpes 2. Have never had any symptoms. Is it really posible that we haven't given eachother both?!?!
Hi Just a Girl,
Thanks for posting your question. I'm not a doctor, so I cannot give medical advice, but I do have herpes and I think I can offer some insight.
There could be two different scenarios here. One is that the tests weren't accurate. There are different ways you can be tested, as healthgal discusses in her Sharepost, The Truth, the Whole Truth, and.... It never hurts to be tested twice, from a different place.
The other scenario is that, yes, you both have different types of HSV and have never passed them on to each other. Although there is potentially always a risk of passing these diseases on to your partner, that is only a potential risk, it is not an absolute certainty. So it is definitely possible that, especially if neither of you have outbreaks, you have never passed your strains to each other. Who knows, maybe having one type of HSV makes your body more resistant to the other type. I don't know...just a thought.
You should read the Causes and Risk Factors section of this website. You might find you and your boyfriend have been more careful than you thought (which is good!). I also recommend you read Genital Herpes Prevention to try and ensure you both stay with your respective herpes types.
Hope that helps!
