Q: I have HSV 1 on my Genitals and want to have unprotected sex with my partner eventually

I recieved HSV 1 from oral sex with my ex-girlfriend and am now with someone new. I don't want to pass it onto her. Will unprotected sex ever be a possibility or should we always have protection? Will the virus still pass if i'm asymptomatic from genital to lips? What are my real limitations in my case if I want to keep her safe from getting the virus?

I have recently been diagnose with HSV-1 on my genitals as well.  My doctor told me that I'm only really contagious during an outbreak. For myself, I wouldn't want to take the risk and have sex without a condom because it is easy to be having an outbreak and not know it or have any symptoms.  I've read that 75% of people who have sex with someone with this virus is going to catch it, so using a condom is the best way to prevent spreading it to your partner if she doesn't already have the virus.  Hope this helps, and good luck to you!
