Hi alwaysknow,

Thanks for your question. I'm not a doctor, but I do have herpes so I think I can answer you.

I assume you have genital herpes and you're worried about spreading it to other parts of your body.  There is a risk that you can spread the virus to other parts of your body, though it would be difficult.  You should be very careful while having an outbreak and wash your hands after using the bathroom or touching the infected area.  Also, be especially careful not to touch a sore and then touch your eye as that could lead to an infection and subsequent blindness.  I wouldn't worry too much while taking a shower.

I'm sure I have even touched a sore with my finger and never got skin herpes (but I definitely always wash my hands after touching sores or lesions).  It's always good to be careful but don't be too obsessive about it.  The chances of spreading the type of herpes you have to another part of your body is pretty slim.  Just practice good hygiene, especially during outbreaks, and you should be okay.

If you want more information you can check out the Transmission and Causes and Risk Factors pages.

Hope that helps!

PJ

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
