The only way to know is if you get tested.... Your symptoms sound very simular to an outbreak but maybe they are not exactly HSV, they could be shingles or zolsters which take between 3-5 years to go away. Show your doctor durning an outbreak so he can do a swab of the area and tell you for sure.
