After testing positive for herpes, is there any way of determining how long one has been infected?

Topics:Test Results

I had an extra-marital affair which ended more than 2 years ago. My spouse now knows of this and we have both tested positive for herpes. My spouse insists that the doctor said that the test showed that it was most likely contracted "recently" because of the "high level" of infection. My spouse now suspects that I have been unfaithful in the last two years since the affair (which is not the case). Does the test actually indicate "high" and/or "low" level of infection which would, in turn, indicate the length of time infected?
