Q: Kissing and herpes II

I started dating a woman who has now told me she has Herpes II and we haven't had any sexual contact. What we have done is kiss and she has used her hands in foreplay. I'm 43 and scared to death of getting this disease. I want to know if the kissing (which I didn't see a any outbreak) can transfer herpesII. Also, how soon can I get a test to see if I have herpes II? Also, if she had an outbreak of type II and she had touched herself when she went to the bathroom, then used her hand on me during foreplay, is there a chance I can get the virus.

Hi there, thanks for your question. If your partner has herpes on/around her mouth than, yes, you can get it by kissing. However, you're very unlikely to get genital herpes from your partner because genital herpes is on the genitals. Thus, kissing is a low risk "safer sex" alternative if your partner has genital herpes. For more information how Herpes is spread from partner to partner, check out Dr. Grayson's article Transmitting Herpes: How To Protect The Ones You Love. Your best course of action should be to inform yourself about the details of Herpes transmission through our Transmission page. Following that, you should consult your physician regarding the type of transmission risks your partner incurred and have your partner tested. Until then, try to practice the prevention techniques mentioned in the Tranmissions page. I hope this was of some help, please don't hesitate to post with any other questions or concerns you may have. Also, don't forget to consult your physician before adopting any new knowledge intro practice.
