Q: Contacting HSV-2 genitally if already have HSV-2 orally?

I have a bit of an unusual situation.  I am a male that contacted HSV-2 gentially about 4 years ago, and my new gf and I have intercourse over the past 2 years only with condoms, so she hasnt gotten HSV-2 genitally.  However, we didnt use protection for oral sex and she contacted HSV-2 orally (confirmed by culture test on 1st and only OB).  Its been a year since she contacted HSV-2 orally... what sort of protection does one have against HSV-2 gentially when they already have HSV-2 orally?  I think the answer is no one knows since this situation is so rare.

Wow, it's suppose to be so rare. Check out this NY Times column: consults.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/18/giving-your-partner-herpes/. You may wish to ask this question to this blog. I'm wondering if HSV-2 will actually shed again since it has settled in the upper spine verus lower spine. She might not have another outbreak.

If it's any consolation, the person who infected me denied having any STDs. He could not overcome his embarassment over having herpes-- so he did nothing to protect me and gambled with my health. He alleged that he thought it was impossible to infect someone since he no longer had outbreaks. He also alleged there were no other victims since his ex-wife many years ago. I was just unlucky like your girlfriend.

I am very curious to know if your girlfriend has outbreaks in the future, I guess she could pass back to the genitals of an unifected partner during oral sex. If she does have outbreaks, she could take antiviral drugs-- it reduces shedding for some persons, not all, by atleast half. I have a severe case of herpes and have monthly outbreaks even with antiviral drugs six years later.

Thanks for responding and sorry to hear your ex was not upfront about his situation.  I know a lot about HSV like many who have it and spend time researching.  There is an extremely high probablity that my gf wont have another oral outbreak, in fact, one expert who has been studying it in Washington state said that he has never convincingly seen a second outbreak of oral HSV-2, and he probably has more experience through studies with his collegues (Wald), then just about anyone.  Also, HSV-2 oral rarely sheds as well, and if we stay together as planned then she needn't worry about giving someone genital HSV-2 since I already have it.  I have had great sucess with Valtrex as its been two years and only had 1 minor outbreak since taking them.  I wish they could have the same performance for you.  Take care.
