Can a blood test accurately detect genital herpes type 2 without any prior symptons?

Confused by the Drs?
Topics:Getting Tested

I was recently diagnosed with genital herpes, which appears to have been dormant for several years. My partner and I have received conflicting information from our medical drs re: whether he should be tested or not.  He has never had any symptons so one DR said the blood test is useless if not showing symptons, another DR said it would be more than 50% accurate in detecting if he is infected, regardless of whether showing any symptons now or in the past.   Please help - - we're confused!!!

My understanding is that a blood/serum test IS available to detect antibodies for HSV 1 or HSV 2...it can specify which HSV you have...so go and ask specifically for that one...do research to find out the names.

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
