Hi Ms.V   Thanks for asking your question.  I'm not a doctor, and so cannot make medical decisions or statements, but I do have herpes and can try and give some insight into the situation.  From what I understand, herpes is a virus that needs to be carried and transmitted via some form of animal vessel.  I cannot say for sure, but my guess is that you can only contract herpes from other people, not from bacterial infections.  I'm actually pretty surprised that your partner's doctor would say that you could have got herpes from a bacterial infection, as that would be saying that the bacteria alone was carrying herpes.   My understanding is that bacteria infections are caused by a surplus of bacteria we normally carry in our bodies.  So if you didn't have herpes before, I don't see how you could have got it from yourself.     I think you should get another opinion from a different doctor to know for sure.  You may also want to look at the Transmitting Herpes , as well as the Causes and Risk Factors , pages.  I also find the Coping with Herpes page helpful.     Good luck!   PJ
