My boyfriend dated someone with HSV2 and they used protection during sex.  I am not clear if they used protection during oral sex, but I wondered if it could be passed by kissing alone or does it have to be via sex/oral sex (female giving oral sex to male)?

HSV-2 can affect any area of the skin or mucous membranes. If the person is contagious and is 'shedding' the virus it can be transmitted in saliva, therefore kissing is a means of viral transmission. Although the virus is more likely to be transmitted when sores are present, the absence of sores does not guarantee this. This article provides some good insights into how the virus can be transmitted.

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
