can hsv2 be transmitted by kissing ?

My boyfriend dated someone with HSV2 and they used protection during sex. I am not clear if they used protection during oral sex, but I wondered if it could be passed by kissing alone or does it have to be via sex/oral sex (female giving oral sex to male)?

HSV-2 can affect any area of the skin or mucous membranes. If the person is contagious and is 'shedding' the virus it can be transmitted in saliva, therefore kissing is a means of viral transmission. Although the virus is more likely to be transmitted when sores are present, the absence of sores does not guarantee this.
