Just learned about my girlfriend having herpes, she says it is a mild case and rarely flairs up?

SHe says she dated two doctors before me and they were not concerned, that it was a mild case. her daughter did not get the virus when she was born. SHe does not take medicine for it and never has. I care about her very much and just want to keep myself safe. I wonder if she really has it. SHe claims that no one has gotten anything like that from her. My first instinct is to run like hell, but I love everything else about her.
