Q: Contracting herpes

I was just informed by my girlfriend that she has had herpes since she was 18 she is now 27. She has only had two outbreaks since. One was when she was twenty and the other when she was 21. She has not had any in six years. We have exchanged in oral sex activities without my knowledge of her having herpes. If she did not have any outbreak at the time. Am I still able to contract the virus? If so what do I expierence and is there any prevention that I can do for myself right now? Prescription drugs?

Hi ABatt,

Thanks for asking your question.  I'm not a doctor, but I do have herpes and think I can answer you.

Yes, you can still contract herpes, even if your partner is not having an outbreak.  If you were infected with the virus, you may experience any type of symptoms ranging from fever and swelling to absolutely nothing at all.  The only way for you to know if you got it is to get tested.  It's possible to have it without symptoms.

If you did get it, there is nothing you can do now to reverse it as there is no cure.  But there is the (more likely) possibility that you didn't get it, in which case you can still protect yourself while maintaining a relationship with your girlfriend.  You should check out the Genital Herpes Transmission, Prevention, and Causes and Risk Factors pages to learn more about the disease and how to protect yourself.
