Genital Herpes and Transmission via Kissing?

Can I get genital herpes by kissing someone that gets cold sores that are caused by HSV 2? In other words, they got the cold sores by giving oral sex to someone with genital herpes?

Are condoms enough to protect me?

I just found out that a guy I've been dating for a month has herpes. He says he hasn't had an infection in a full year, but I want to know the safest way to move forward with the physical side of our relationship. If we use condoms every time, will that protect me? Does anyone have any advice?
