A new drug called bavituximab has shown promise in providing scientists with a new strategy for fighting a number of viral illnesses, Texas researchers say. In a press release from UT Southwestern Medical Center, scientists report that the drug works by making it harder for viruses to replicate and become immune to the effects of anti-viral medicines. Because of this, bavituximab may one day be effective at treating a wide variety of viruses, including hepatitis, influenza, herpes, and HIV.
