Catching a cold sore could put you at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, a new study suggests. British researchers say that the herpes virus that causes cold sores is responsible for most of the protein plaques that build up in the brain of Alzheimer's patients. The key, researchers say, is that the herpes virus lays dormant for years, but is reactivated when an older person's immune system is weakened by stress or other infections.
