U.S. researchers say that a cheap, generic drug usually used to treat genital herpes may help control the AIDS virus in people who are infected with both viruses. In a recent study, scientists found that the drug, acyclovir, causes the herpes virus itself to change the drug into a form that can work against HIV. Investigators say they hope their team can find better ways to use acyclovir against AIDS, and perhaps design new products to prevent infection.
