Research presented at the International AIDS Conference has found that a vaginal gel reduced women's risk of becoming infected with HIV by 39 percent and reduced their genital herpes risk by 51 percent when it was applied consistently before and after sex. Scientists say if the gel, which contains 1 percent tenofovir, was used by women in the general population in the manner utilized in the study, it has the potential to change the course of the HIV epidemic.
