Q&A: Can Valtrex be used as a "day after" drug?

A reader asks Joe and Teresa Graedon of The People's Pharmacy if the herpes drug Valtrex can be used to prevent the infection if a person has contact with someone who has genital herpes. The reader wonders if exposure to the drug immediately after the contact will destroy the virus before it has a chance to take hold and become dormant. The Graedons respond with information about the use of Valtrex as a preventative herpes treatment that they received from the drug's maker, GlaxoSmithKline.
